Pink frangipani cluster on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small cluster of three five-petalled flowers, likely frangipani, is drawn in fine black outline on the side of an ankle. The petals are softly filled with red and pink wash that fades toward the edges, while the outlines remain thin and grey-black. The design sits near the centre of the frame against plain, pale skin.

The cutting arrives in a jam jar wrapped in wet newspaper, and the postmaster's wife sets it on the counter as if it might bruise. You know the handwriting on the label before you read it. Tomas went down the pit at sixteen, and at twenty-two he took a berth on a cargo boat bound for Penang because the valley had nothing left to dig.

Frangipani, the label says in capitals, and underneath, in smaller letters: keep it out of the frost. Nothing grows on the slate hillside but thistle and gorse, and the only warmth in the village is the range in your back kitchen. You set the jar on the south sill, where coal dust settles grey on the glass each morning, and you wipe it clean with the corner of your apron before the kettle is on.

The cutting grows two leaves, then a third, pale green and stubborn. Mrs Pryce from number nine says it will never flower in Glamorgan, and you tell her it has never been asked to. In the evenings you carry the jar to the lamp and turn it slowly, the way Tomas used to turn a seam of coal to see where the light caught the grain.

In March a bud splits along one edge. By Sunday it has opened into five white petals, blushing pink at the throat as though it had been out in the sun all along. You cut it free, carry it down past the chapel to the pithead gate, and press it into the hand of the first man coming off shift. Tell him it is from Penang. Watch him hold it to the grey light as if it were a lamp.
