Small lotus tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower is outlined in thin black ink on the side of an ankle, with petals drawn in simple open shapes. The linework is clean and even, and the design is in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The bare ankle and foot fill most of the frame, with a patterned fabric hem visible above and beside it.

The snow had come early to the Harrowgate pass, and Piran Vosse had been leading the mules through it since before light, his breath freezing on the scarf his mother had knitted. In his left pocket, wrapped twice in oilcloth, was the seed pod Marta had pressed into his palm at the lowland market. "Plant it where the water sits still," she had said, "and don't ask me why, because I don't know."

By noon the track had narrowed to a ledge no wider than a cart. The lead mule, a grey called Nettle, stopped and would not go on, ears flat, staring at a black crack in the rock where meltwater ran fast and loud. Piran cursed, then laughed at himself, because there was a hollow below the ledge, a shallow pool the thaw had filled, and its surface lay perfectly still.
He knelt on the wet stone, unwrapped the pod, and pressed it into the mud at the pool's edge with two frozen fingers. Nothing about it looked like a promise. Then Nettle stepped forward, sure-footed now, and the others followed her across without a single slip.
The next summer, traders coming up from the valley reported a pool of pale flowers at the Harrowgate pass, open in the morning and folded shut by dusk, their petals drawn as cleanly as a line of ink on paper. Piran never went back to see them. He liked to think the mules still knew the way.
