It was Nell Harrow who brought it, in a tin bucket with a cracked handle, the autumn the lane flooded. She walked from the station with it under one arm and a spade over her shoulder, and she didn't stop to ask anyone's leave. Your great-great-aunt Mary said she looked like a woman who'd been told no once too often and had decided to plant things anyway.

Nell pushed the root into the clay by the south wall and scattered dark seeds on the bare patch, and she sang while she did it, badly, a song about a ferryman. The seeds, she said, were for whoever came after. Nobody knew what she meant. Then in March five pink hearts hung from one arching stem, each one bright as a boiled sweet, and the bindweed round them curled into loops like handwriting nobody could read.

Nell left the week the hearts opened. We never learned where she went. But every spring since, a tendril climbs the wall in the shape of a question mark, and the dots that fall from the flowers are seeds. Plant one where you'd like to be remembered, she used to say, and wait for the wall to decide. So I'm telling you, love, the wall has decided. Hand me that trowel.
