In the winter the river at Ostry froze so hard the dye-works shut, and Ilse Carrow, the palace ink-maker's daughter, was sent up the hill with a satchel of pigments and orders to paint the king's new hunting map before the thaw. She had never been allowed past the library door. The guard at the gate, a man with a cold red nose, let her through because she was carrying the blue.

In the library she found an older map pinned under glass, drawn in black ink by a clerk dead a hundred years. It showed two round hills on the eastern ridge, each with a loop of road curling over its crest like a ribbon. The king's surveyors called them the Ears and wanted them scraped off the vellum as a foolishness of the old days.

Ilse did not scrape them. She mixed a wash of rose madder and let it bleed outward from the ridge, the way rain spreads across wet paper, then ran a thread of cobalt down toward the valley where the river lay frozen. The surveyors came to shout. She told them the ink behaved strangely in cold weather, and they believed her because they were afraid of the cold.

When the thaw came, the river loosened and the pink had dried into a sunrise sitting over the Ears. The king stopped his horse to admire it and asked who had painted it. Ilse kept her eyes on the satchel. "The paper did, Your Majesty," she said, and he laughed and gave her the blue ink for free.
