Pink hearts and swirls on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The design shows four pink hearts with dark shaded edges, joined by thin black swirling lines and curls that loop across the skin. The linework is fine and even, and the hearts are filled with flat pink ink that contrasts with the black outlines. The design runs diagonally across the ankle against a dark background.

You are on the fourteenth-floor walkway of Harrow Point when the wind takes the first balloon. It is pink and shaped like a heart, and it was meant for Mrs Okafor's grandson's party, which is tomorrow, not today. The string slides through your fingers and scorches a little before you let go, and you watch it lift past the drying washing and the satellite dishes.

Downstairs, Dell from number six is shouting that there's another one, and then another. Four hearts drift up the face of the block, each tugging on a thin black line that loops and curls as if someone has been drawing with a very steady hand. Nobody on the estate owns a pen that steady. The lift has been broken since March, so you take the stairwell, counting landings past the smell of bleach and old chips, and the hearts keep pace with you through the gaps in the concrete.
By the time you reach the car park they have snagged on the lamp posts and come loose again, drifting low over the bin sheds toward the canal. At the towpath a man in a grey coat is holding the ends of the strings with no hurry at all, as though he has been waiting for someone to bring him the other half. He says the strings were never tied to anything. They were tied to whoever was willing to let go, and you are the one who did.
You take the lines from him and walk them back the way you came, round the car park, under the walkway, up fourteen flights with your legs full of lead. At the top the first heart is waiting on the railing, bobbing gently, pink and patient, as if it had only ever gone round the block to see whether you would follow.
