Traditional · Colour · Flash

A drawing of pink lips clenched around a gold bullet casing, with the script words Trust no Bitch engraved on its side. The lips and teeth are shaded with pink and white tones and the bullet has metallic gold shading and a pointed tip. The plain cream background keeps the focus on the central design.

She laughed and said it was worth more than my shop, and I told her nothing in my drawers was worth more than my shop.

She left. I put the casing in the safe, then took it out again, because a warning is only useful if somebody reads it. The end was unscrewed with a fingernail. Inside, rolled tight as a cigarette, was a single receipt from a Bolton jeweller, dated Tuesday, with my own shop's name written across the bottom in a hand I knew.

Downstairs the shutter rattled, then went still. Someone was testing it, the way I'd taught myself to test everything.
