Trust Your Struggle lettering sketch

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten black script reads Trust Your Struggle, with a looping capital T and a large flowing S that extends around the words. The strokes are even and of medium weight, drawn with a black marker on cream paper. The lettering fills most of the frame, with a Sharpie marker partly visible at the top edge.

Your hand was always the steadiest on the shop, though you never believed me. Remember the afternoon you spoiled three sheets of gilt for the Co-operative's sign, how you sat on the step with your fists in your lap and said you were no use at anything with a long tail on it? Dunmore only shrugged and handed you the next sheet. He said the trouble was you kept trying to make the letters behave before they had decided what they wanted to be.

I went through his drawers on Tuesday looking for the brush case and found your practice sheets folded in the bottom. Every one of them has the same looping T, sprawling out across the page like it is looking for somewhere to land, and the S beneath it swinging round the whole line as though it means to hold the words in place. Under the last one he had written in his small square pencil, Trust the struggle, it is only the hand learning the shape. I thought at first it was a lesson for the customers. Then I saw the date was the week before the fever took him.

So I am sending these back to you, all of them, with the pencil note left where he put it. Come home when the frost comes. The window wants a new line and I can't make the tail of the g look right without you standing over me, tutting.
