Pink lotus tattoo with sticker sheet
Botanical · Colour · Photo
The left panel is a photograph of a lotus flower on skin, with petals in magenta and pink shading and fine dark linework for the stem and petal edges. The right panel is a product image of a fashion temporary tattoo sticker sheet, labelled RC-228, showing one large lotus and three smaller lotus designs on a white background. Colour is the dominant ink, and the composition places the skin photo beside the sheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The pond behind Thornfield Mill had frozen so hard that spring that the carp rose only as shadows under the ice, and my grandmother said that was the year the lotus would not come up. She was wrong, as she was about most things she could not see, but I believed her all the same. I was eleven and bored of being told what could not happen, so I took the iron bucket and a cracked spade down the lane to the old drainage ditch where the water never quite froze.

The root I dug up was the colour of a bruise going yellow, knotted and heavy with mud. I carried it home wrapped in my jumper, and when I set it in a dish of rainwater on the windowsill, my grandmother came in with flour on her hands and stopped dead. She did not scold me. She only pulled a chair up and watched it with me, and told me the flower opens in the morning and folds itself shut before the heat of noon, and that it grows up through black water without taking a drop of the mud on its petals.
It bloomed on the third day, a deep rose pink at the tip of each petal, fading to paler at the heart, and the stem bent under the weight of it like a girl leaning to hear a secret. My grandmother had been right about one thing after all. She pressed her finger to the edge of a petal and said, quite softly, that it was the first flower she had ever seen that looked as though it had been painted by someone who was in a hurry to finish before the light changed.
