Pink blossom branch on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink five-petalled blossoms with yellow centres and small green leaves runs diagonally down the arm from the upper edge of the frame. The petals use soft pink shading and lighter highlights, with fine outlines around the flowers and stems. The design is shown in colour against plain white, with the arm filling most of the frame.

The branch had been cut in the orchard above Hale the morning the boat was loaded, and by the time the grey coast slid behind them it had already dropped two petals onto the planks. Ysolde kept it in a jug of salt water by the tiller because her grandmother had told her a cut branch must never go dry on a crossing. The men called it bad luck. They said nothing when the wind dropped for three days and the sail hung like washing.

On the fourth morning Tobias Crane, who had the heaviest hands on the crew, carried the jug to the rail and said the sea wanted paying. He tipped the water out. The branch lay on the wet boards, its five-petalled flowers still pink at the edges, the yellow centres bright as coins. Ysolde picked it up without a word and laid it on the bow, where the spray would reach it, and she sang the old count of the orchard trees under her breath until the sun came up.
By noon a breeze came from the south-west, thin at first and then steady, and the leaves along the branch turned their pale undersides to the light. Nobody spoke of it. Nobody needed to. They raised the harbour bell of Saint Brannoc's on the seventh day, and Ysolde walked up the shingle with the branch wrapped in sailcloth, looking for a patch of earth that faced the sun.
She pushed the cut end into the bank below the old wall and packed it with stones and seawater. Four springs later the wall was pink from end to end, and the boatmen who had sailed with her said you could smell the orchard from the mouth of the harbour.
