Pink realism roses on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two pink roses are tattooed one above the other on the arm, with darker green leaves filling the edges of the design. The petals are rendered with smooth, soft shading and bright highlights that give them a glossy, lifelike look. The left panel shows the full arm and the right panel is a close-up of the upper rose.

Mrs Hollis had the glasshouse door propped open with a brick, and the morning came in smelling of wet soil and cut stems. Tomasz, the nursery lad, was late again, so Ada knelt at the bed herself, wiping the sap from her secateurs, and looked for the bloom she had promised the show committee.

It was in the third row, a Silver Lady her husband had raised from a cutting the year before he died. Two buds had come on the same stem, one tucked beneath the other like children at a wedding, and the upper one had opened first. Its outer petals had gone the colour of the inside of a shell, pink at the edges and deepening toward the heart, and dew sat on them in beads that caught the light from the roof vents.
She could not decide whether to cut the upper or the lower. Reginald would have cut the lower. He always said the first flower is for the bees and the second is for the judge. She pictured him saying it, leaning on the potting bench with his cap pushed back, and found she was smiling at the roses rather than at the memory.
In the end she took neither. She snipped the leaves away so the two blooms stood alone, then carried the pot out into the yard where the sun reached over the wall. Let the judges come and look at them in the open air. Let them see how the lower rose leaned into the upper one, as if it had something to tell it.
