Pink roses with dew on a limb

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

Two pink roses with dew droplets dominate the composition, with a third rose partly visible at the lower left and dark foliage behind them. The petals use soft smooth shading and fine highlights, with blended pinks and reds. The dark background ink and shading make the flowers stand out against the skin, and the design wraps around the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okonedo kept the glasshouse keys on a loop of baler twine and would not let me hold them. "Not until you can tell a rose from the dew sitting on it," he said each morning, handing me the secateurs and nothing else. I thought it was spite. The Lady Ellen bush behind the potting shed was the last of its line, and frost was forecast for the Thursday.

So I went out before the sun cleared the hedge, boots soaking through, and walked the rows with a torch I didn't need. Dew lay in beads along every petal, sitting in the cups of the blooms like spilt mercury. Mr Okonedo had told me the water was the plant's own night-time breath, and that a bloom cut while it still wore its dew would drink through the sand and root by spring. A bloom cut dry would only wilt on the bench and blame you for it.

I found the right one at the far end, three buds open and one fat bud still shut tight, and I cut it with my heart going as if I were stealing something. The dew ran down the stem and into my cuff. Back at the bench Mr Okonedo lifted the cloth off the tray without a word, studied the beads, then looked at me for longer than was comfortable.

"You'll do," he said, and dropped the keys into my palm. The twine was warm from his pocket. I hung them on my belt and walked the length of the glass, and every pane was beaded with water, each drop catching the first pink light, the way it had caught on the roses that morning.
