Pink rose and leaves on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small pink rose bud and open bloom sit on a fine green stem with serrated leaves, drawn in delicate linework with soft flat fills. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist and forearm of a hand resting on light blue denim, with a cream knitted cardigan at the edge of the frame. The plain, soft-toned background keeps the focus on the design.

The bride wanted the roses cut at first light, because her gran had always said a rose keeps its colour better if it is taken before the dew burns off. So Nell was out by the back wall of the rectory garden at six, boots soaked through, secateurs in her apron pocket and a galvanised bucket knocking against her shin. The bush had been planted by the last vicar's wife and nobody had pruned it properly since, so it arched over the path in long green lengths, leaves serrated like a saw blade, every stem wearing a thin skin of wet.

She worked down the bush slowly, counting. Two open blooms for every three stems, the pale pink heads going papery at the edges, and one tight bud on each cutting so the arrangement would keep opening through the afternoon. She had nearly enough when she reached the last stem on the north side, a single bud, not quite pink yet, just a blush held in a fold of green. Her hand stopped. Her mum had called these the late ones and never let anyone cut them. Nell left it where it was and told herself the bride would not miss one bud out of forty.
The wedding went off at two. Nell stood at the back of the marquee with a tray of tea and watched the bouquet pass her on the bride's arm, and it looked exactly as it should, the pink heads tilted together like people leaning in to hear a secret. Afterwards, when the speeches had started and the caterers were stacking chairs, she walked back to the wall in her good shoes and found the late bud still on its stem, swollen now, the petals just beginning to unfold at the lip.
She cut it with the last of her nerve and carried it home on the bus in a jam jar wrapped in a tea towel. By Monday the bud had opened into a small, loose rose, the colour of the inside of a shell, and she set it on the windowsill where the morning light could reach it.
