Pink roses and black lace down a leg
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two large pink roses are shaded with soft gradients and sit on a black lace pattern that wraps from the calf down over the ankle. The lace is outlined in bold black ink with fine mesh detail and small leaves, and the roses have realistic petal shading. The image is a close angled shot against a dark background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The pattern card had come by second post, and by Thursday it was the only thing Ruth Akinola would look at across the bench. Black bobbinet, the mesh pulled tight as a honeycomb, then a scrolled border that curled like a fern unrolling. Her father had drawn it in pencil before the Sneinton mill shut, and in the margin he had written in capitals: ROSES WHERE THE ANKLE BENDS. PINK UNDER THE BLACK, NEVER OVER.

The frame stood at the back of the shed under a tarpaulin, eleven feet of iron with a hundred and twenty bobbins nobody had threaded since the winter the last carriage stopped. The buyer wanted a finished length by Friday, and Ruth had promised. She caught the early train from Carlton with the card folded in her coat and a carrier bag of spools knocking against her knee. Outside the window the rain flattened the allotments into grey strips, and at Netherfield a porter was sweeping spilt confetti off the platform.
She worked through the Thursday night with the wireless off and the bulb swinging. The lace came off the frame slowly, a hexagon at a time, and each time the carriage ran she felt her father's hands on the wheel beside hers, correcting her tension without a word. The roses were the hard part. She had laid a pink silk ground beneath the mesh so the colour would glow through the holes like light through a blind.
At dawn she held the finished panel up to the window. The silk showed through the black in soft gradients, the petals opening where the lace had been pulled thinnest, and the border curled around them as if it had always known where to go.
