Star chain bracelet tattoo on wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A chain bracelet with two open five-pointed stars and linked chain segments wraps around the wrist. The links and stars are outlined and shaded in black and grey, with soft highlights giving them a slightly three-dimensional look. The tattoo runs across the centre of the frame against a dark background, with the skin of the hand and wrist filling the rest of the photo.

Dilys had the ovens lit before the clock over the proving racks reached four, and by the time the first tins came out the window was still black and the car park lamp buzzed like a trapped wasp. Owen came through from the back with flour on his hands and the look of a boy who has been caught at something. The van was locked, he said. The keys were not on the hook.

The hook sat beside the proving cupboard, and from it hung the old brass chain her mother had used for weighing sugar before the digital scales came in. Five-pointed stars were threaded along it, shortbread cutters, each joined to the next by a worn link. Dilys counted them with her floury thumb. Two were missing from the far end, and the chain swung loose where they had been, catching the light each time the door opened.
"Who had them?" she asked. Owen went red to the ears and admitted it was Marta from the bakery down the lane, who had come in last night wanting to borrow the cutters for her daughter's birthday, and who had been gone before anyone could ask when she would bring them back. Dilys said nothing for a while. She filled the kettle, then put it back on its stand. Behind the church the sky had begun to thin to grey.
At half past five the bell over the door went and Marta came in breathless, a paper bag in one hand and the two stars in the other, still faintly warm from her daughter's kitchen. Dilys hung them back on the chain, link by link, then pressed one star into the top of the nearest loaf so it would bake with a gold edge. "Morning," said Marta. "Morning," said Dilys, and the first light came over the hill and caught the chain.
