Pixel lettering HM04 on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A flexed upper arm shows the characters HM04 in solid black, blocky pixel-style lettering. The letters have crisp, even edges and no shading, and the skin around them is plain with a slight redness. The composition is a close, slightly angled view of the arm against black window blinds and a teal wall.

Cabinet HM04 came off the lorry at Hollins Pier on a wet Tuesday, a fortnight before the season, with its glass cracked and a note taped to the coin door in careful capitals: DO NOT PLUG IN UNTIL MR PRIDDY SEES IT. Mr Priddy had been dead since March. Nobody had told the driver, so Dennis Ash signed for it anyway and wheeled it into the back room behind the penny falls, where the damp got into everything.

I was the one who opened it up. Dennis had the knack with a soldering iron but no patience, and I had more patience than was good for me. Inside, the board was furred with forty summers of sea air. Under the main chip someone had scratched a second set of initials into the metal, a pair of hearts and a date from 1979. The high score table was kept alive by a battery the size of a shirt button. Three names sat in the memory, the first two blank, the last one reading HM04 in the chunky blocks the old screen used for everything.

I did not know what it meant. I made a pot of tea, let the cabinet sit overnight, and the next morning I found the screen lit, the attract mode cycling through its little ships, and a line of text across the bottom that I had not typed: NOT YET.

I left the three names where they were. I cleaned the contacts, screwed the glass back on, and pinned the note to the side panel where the next man would find it. Then I typed my own initials beneath HM04, a fourth name on a board nobody had played since the summer of the big storm, and watched the cursor blink, waiting for someone to come and beat it.
