Flash design of a skull made from a pizza slice with dripping cheese, pepperoni eyes and a banner reading Small Steps, in a traditional style.

Pizza skull with Small Steps banner

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A skull built from a pizza slice, with yellow melting cheese dripping from its brow, cheekbones and jaw and two red pepperoni discs sitting where the eyes would be. The bold dark outlines, textured fills and tan crust give it a traditional flash look, set against a flat orange background. A tan scroll banner across the jaw carries the words SMALL STEPS in dark block lettering.

Brother Ambrose had been warned that the cheese would not survive the vow of silence, and on the third Tuesday of Lent I found he was right. I had flour to the elbows and a dough that sulked whenever I looked at it.

Abbot Cuthbert came down the cellar steps with his sandals slapping, sniffing like a hound. "Brother, is that the smell of sin?"

"It is tomato, Father, and a little of the sin of pride." I had cut pepperoni rounds from the Lenten sausage the farmers' wives pressed on us, and laid them out beside a wedge of flatbread heavy with more cheese than the rule allowed any man.

He picked up a disc and turned it to the light for so long that I began to pray. Then he laughed, a wheezing thing that brought the lay brothers running. "Two eyes looking back at me, and a jaw of melted cheese. You have made a memento mori for the greedy." He pointed at the crust, which I had shaped into a hood and scored with a knife in the manner of the old psalters. "Saint Benedict wrote that we climb the ladder of humility one rung at a time. Small steps, Brother. Not one great leap into the oven."

He took the slice upstairs to the refectory, folded it carefully into a napkin, and I heard him eating it on the stairs, muttering the Compline responses through a mouthful of cheese. The next morning the oven was still warm, and I was already rolling out the next one.
