Pizza slice with eye on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A pizza slice with a crust at the base and a bite out of its tip sits at the centre of the image, with a green eye with a purple lid placed in its middle. A bright orange and red sunburst glows behind the slice, and small pepperoni circles are shaded in brown. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated fills in orange, red, purple, brown and green make up the design, which is photographed straight on against a blue surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dai Pritchard had been told the road over the Bwlch was a shortcut, and by the second hairpin he understood that whoever said so had never carried a pizza over it. The box sat on the passenger seat, steaming through its vents, and the sat-nav had given up somewhere after the last farm gate. Below him the valley lay under a lid of cloud, and the only light came from the sun catching a single slope of the far ridge.

He had taken the order from Mrs Olwen Probert, who lived alone at the top of the pass and rang every Friday at seven with the same request: a large, extra pepperoni, left on the step with the change in the jar. Nobody had ever told him what the jar was for. This Friday the pepperoni was real, the cheese was not quite melted, and the slice on the lid had a bite out of its tip where someone, presumably Olwen, had already started without him.

At the summit the cloud tore open. Dai stopped the van because the view demanded it, and found himself looking straight at a stone cairn with a painted eye on it, green and patient, its lid drawn in violet like a closing curtain. Above it the sun had come out so suddenly and fiercely that the orange light seemed to pour from the eye itself. He understood then that the eye had been watching the pizza all the way up the hill.

He drove the last mile with the window down and the box on his knee. When he reached the cottage the step was empty, the jar was empty too, and a single pepperoni lay on the gravel, glowing like a coin. He picked it up, pocketed it, and did not charge the call.
