Patrick Star in a rope frame on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon pink starfish with wide eyes and an open mouth sits in a choppy sea beneath a pink and purple sunset sky. A twisted rope border frames the scene, and a scallop shell with two starfish sits at the base. The shading is smooth with bold dark outlines, and the palette is mainly pinks, purples, blues and greens.

Gather in, gather in, and mind the generator cable, it bites. Now, you lot at the back with the toffee apples, this is the tale of the starfish who swam out past the breakwater the night the fair packed up in Skegness, and never swam back.

His name was Ambrose Pink, though the sailors called him Mister Ambrose on account of his manners, and he had a pair of eyes on him as round as pound coins, which is how you could always tell he was surprised. He'd been a prize on the coconut shy, you understand, won by a lad from Boston who lost him again at cards the same week. So Ambrose knew what it was to be passed from hand to hand. He had no wish to be passed again.

Out past the buoys the water turned the colour of a bruised plum, and the sky went pink as a boiled sweet, then purple, and the clouds came piling up like the candyfloss men stacking their tubs. Ambrose bobbed there with his mouth wide open, singing the only tune he knew, the one the organ grinder played when the ghost train started. The sea kept quiet. The sea had heard it before.

Then a rope came down out of the dusk, knotted and tarry, the very rope from the big top, and it looped itself around him and the sunset as neat as a frame in a parlour. Ambrose looked up through it and understood at last that he was the picture, not the one looking at it. Two of his cousins came swimming up with a scallop shell to keep him company, which I'm told is the sign of a happy ending, though you'll have to judge that yourselves when you pay at the gate.
