A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The board was cut from a pear that split in the August gale. Mrs Oakes sanded it on the back step while wasps worked the windfalls at her feet, then painted YES on one side, NO on the other, and a plain ring above them for the answer nobody wants. The pointer she made from the same wood, with a hexagon of red and pink for the cells of the comb and a green glass eye set in its nose, so it could see who was asking.

Her grandson Tom asked first, being twelve and sure of everything. Would the Carrow lad come back for the harvest dance? The pointer slid under his fingers, past YES, past NO, and rested on the ring. Tom said the thing was broken and wandered off to rob the Discovery trees. His gran only pressed the wood flat and told him to keep his hands light next time.

Years later, after the orchard had been sold off in lots and the old house let to strangers, Tom came back alone with the board wrapped in a jumper. He asked it whether his gran had known he would never stay. Nothing moved for a long while. Then the pointer swung to YES, quick and certain, and he understood she had only ever been waiting for the question.
