Colour fine line tattoo on a forearm of coloured planet balloons rising from an astronaut and a girl standing on a blue night sky.

Planet balloons held by an astronaut and a girl

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A colourful tattoo shows a bunch of planets drawn as balloons, including a moon, Saturn with its rings, a blue and green Earth and striped gas giants in orange, grey, purple and pink. Their strings gather in the hands of a small outlined astronaut and a girl with a ponytail standing against a soft blue wash of sky. The thin dark outlines and gentle shading sit on a lower arm, with the planets filling the upper part of the design and the figures below.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off the harbour had been tugging at the bundle since breakfast, and by the time you reached the top of Gull Hill the strings hummed in your fist like wires. Nine balloons, painted by your uncle on scraps of sailcloth: a grey moon, a green one with dark whorls, an orange giant banded like a cut plank, a purple one with a ring of ice, and a blue Earth you had spent a wet afternoon getting right. You had promised Tom Rennie you would bring them up before the ferry left.

Tom was waiting by the wall in his grandfather's diving helmet, dented from some old storm, the air hose trailing behind him like a tail. He had built a rocket from two oil drums and a deckchair, and it sat in the gorse waiting for a launch that had been put off all summer for want of a clear sky. The sky was clear now. Beyond him the sea had turned the colour of slate, and the first stars pricked through above Corran Point.

'Hold these,' you said. He took the strings in both hands and went quiet the way he did when something mattered. The balloons leaned out over the drop, bright against the dusk, and for a moment you could almost believe they would carry him off. Then a gust came up off the water, the bundle swung, and you grabbed his sleeve, and the two of you stood in a knot of string and laughter while the planets bobbed above your heads.

When the ferry horn sounded below, you walked him back down the path with the balloons between you. He would not let go. At the bottom he tied the strings to the bollard on the quay and looked up at them with the solemn satisfaction of a captain with a rocket and a crew. By morning the grey moon had worked loose and drifted out over the water, and Tom swore to everyone who would listen that he had seen it go.
