Small dot constellation on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of black dots of varying sizes is placed on the inner forearm close to the wrist, arranged in a loose, irregular cluster with a few dots set apart. The dots are crisp and uniformly black with no shading, and the pattern has an open, airy composition. The skin is pale and the background is a light cream bedsheet, which keeps the ink in clear contrast.

The ten-to-two sleeper had already gone through Carrick Junction when Mrs Ives brought me the ledger with the brass corners and asked whether the sky over the platform had changed since Tuesday. I told her it hadn't. She didn't believe me, and she was right not to, because I had been drawing it.

Each night since the Lamp Office closed the old goods yard, I'd stood on the footbridge with a pencil and a tin of sprats for the stray cat and copied whatever showed between the gantry lights. Most of it was ordinary. Some nights a cluster would blink out behind a freight wagon and reappear a quarter-inch to the left, which is how I learned a star can wander if you're patient enough to notice. I marked each one with a single dot, pressing hard so the graphite sat in the paper like a pinprick.
Mrs Ives had a son in the Merchant Navy who sent postcards from ports whose names she couldn't pronounce. She wanted to know which stars her boy would see from wherever he was. I didn't have the heart to tell her that the sky over a station is a borrowed one, stitched together from the parts the lamps leave dark. Instead I showed her the page: a loose drift of dots, a few set apart like stragglers, and one brighter knot where two signals had crossed.
She traced it with a fingertip and said, "That's Thursday, then." I said it was. The next train was already whistling in from the cutting, and for once I didn't check my watch.
