Planet in a starfield on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A shaded grey planet sits at the centre of a dark, dissolving circle filled with small stars and faint pink and red cloud tones. The planet is rendered with soft realistic shading and a pale highlight, while the outer edges break into dripping black ink. The composition is centred on the forearm with the design fading into the surrounding skin.

Her husband, Tobias Hale, said it was only mist off the reservoir. He had said the same about the crows that stopped flying over the parish, and about the well that ran warm in February. He was a man who liked his explanations small enough to carry in one hand.

On the fourth morning the thing itself came up over the hedge, low and heavy, a ball of dull stone no bigger than a cartwheel, turning slowly with its face half lit. Its pale rim caught the sun while the rest of it stayed in shadow, and around its edge the dark was spattered with pinpricks, as if someone had flicked salt into the night. Smoke-red cloud drifted at its shoulder like breath on a cold window.

It came down into the onion bed and settled there without breaking a single leaf. The wife knelt, pressed her palm to its cool face, and said she would keep it. The quince fruited that autumn, small hard fruit with silver specks in the skin. Tobias ate one and still called it mist. Each night after, the moon climbed a hand's width higher over the hedge, and the wife, who had stopped pretending otherwise, left the gate open for it.
