Open lips with planets on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A colour tattoo of open red lips on the inner forearm, with the mouth revealing a shaded grey and black space scene containing several planets, one with a ring. Fine black linework forms a circle, triangles, dotted orbit lines, small stars and a floating planet above the lips. The red lips use smooth shading and highlights, while the cosmic interior is rendered in soft greys, and the geometric lines are centred around the design.

The hall smells of the same floor polish it always did, and someone has pinned a banner to the gym doors reading Class of '99, the H in Hayward curling off the paper. You stand beside a tray of plastic cups and listen to Miss Okafor, who taught chemistry and now teaches nothing, explain to a ring of people that the Milky Way is a barred spiral and that she knew it all along.

Dev Calloway finds you at the trestle table where the crisps are going soft. He still talks with his hands, though now they hold a bottle of something amber. He says the thing he never managed at sixteen: that on the Year Eleven observatory trip, when the coach broke down on the A41 and everyone sang, you were the only one who looked up. He says he kept a photo from that night, a smudge of white with a ringed planet he swore was Saturn. It was a smear on the lens, he admits, and he has been defending it ever since.

You laugh, and it comes out too loud. Dev turns his phone face up on the table. The picture is blurred, a grey curve of moon and one dot that might be Mars or a thumbprint. Still hunting for the rings, he asks. You tell him you stopped chasing them years ago. What you found was on the coach home, after the lights came on and the road went black and nobody could see the sky any more. So you named the stars out loud, one per window, until Mr Pryce told you to hush, and Dev, in the seat behind, carried on for you.
