Planets and nebula with quote on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several planets, including a banded gas giant and a ringed Saturn, floating in a dark starfield with pink and blue nebula clouds. The quote "I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." is lettered in the upper centre of the design. Shading is soft and smooth, with the planets rendered in orange, brown and blue tones against the mostly black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the crossing at Halsk the customs post stood on a stone bridge over a river that ran two colours, and the officer there, Vera Dalca, had one rule that nobody had ever broken: every traveller declared what they carried. Most declared bread, boots, wine, a cousin's goat. One evening in October a thin man in a grey coat came up the bridge with a leather case under his arm and said he had nothing to declare. In twenty years nobody had said that to her and been believed.

She opened the case herself. Inside, on folded green felt, sat seven small worlds no bigger than apples. One was banded in rust and cream, another had a ring around it like a hoop of tarnished brass, and the rest were blue as bruises or pale as milk. Around them lay dark cloth scattered with pinpricks of light. 'Those are only paint and clay,' the man said, 'but they are the planets. I am taking them over the river to people who did not ask me for them.' She asked him what trade he had, since the form required one. He said he had none. He had sat up with the sky for forty winters and could never tell one star from its neighbour, and he was only passionately curious, which the border did not tax.

'That is not a declarable item,' she told him. He agreed, and asked her to stamp the case anyway.

She stamped the lid. Then she did something not in the rules. She lifted the ringed world out, held it up to the lamp, and turned it until the light slid through the gap between ring and globe and threw a thin bright line across her desk. When she set it back on the felt the man was already on the far bank, his coat dark against the lights of the next village, and the river below the bridge went on carrying its two colours down toward the sea.
