Planets in a row with Saturn on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A row of solid black circles of varying sizes runs across the inner forearm near the wrist, with the largest circle at the centre and one ringed like Saturn. The dots shrink towards both ends, ending in tiny specks, and the design is set against plain pale skin on a dark background. The linework is clean and fully filled, with no shading or colour.

Dear Tom, the frost has got into the ewe pens again and Dad has been out since five with the lamp, so forgive the smudge where I knocked the ink over. I found your telescope box in the loft yesterday, the one with the brass lid that never shut properly. Mum had wrapped the eyepiece in one of your old school jumpers. I sat on a bale and looked through it at the lane for an hour before I realised I was only looking at the Pickersgill gate.

You wrote in October that from the top field you could line up the whole solar system on the ridge, Jupiter first, then Saturn with its rings like a tilted plate, then the little ones trailing off toward the hedge. I laughed at that. Last night, though, I went out after the feed with the torch switched off and found them, one after another. The big pale one came first, then Saturn low over the barn roof, then the smaller points shrinking away until I couldn't tell whether I was seeing them or only remembering the order you gave them.

Dad caught me standing in the yard and asked what I was doing. I said I was counting. He said counting was no use without a sum to go with it, and went back to the lambing. This morning, though, there was a dent in the frost by the gate where he had stood a long time, and a row of chalk circles on the barn door, the largest one with a ring drawn round it, and the dots getting smaller at either end until the chalk ran out.

So I am posting the telescope back with the lid mended. Come home at Easter and we will set it up on the ridge together. Bring your star charts, because Dad has started asking questions about them. Your sister, Hannah.
