Scattered black dots on the inner wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist showing a cluster of about a dozen small, solid black dots arranged in an irregular pattern. The dots are evenly sized and sharply defined, with no shading or linework between them. The pale skin and soft, neutral background keep the focus on the ink, which sits in a loose band across the wrist.

Marguerite had kept the brass stylus in the kitchen drawer beneath the bread knife for thirty-one years, and it still sat in her palm as if it had been cut to fit. On the table lay a letter from Mrs Okonedo at the old Harrow Road school, four pages of cream paper pricked through from the back, so that the raised dots rose under the fingertips like a field of small hills.

Her grandson Tobias had come round to clear the loft and found the letter wedged between two encyclopaedias. He leaned over her shoulder, frowning at the paper. "Gran, it's all holes. Is it a secret?"
"It's all dots, and it's only a secret if you can't read it," she said, and ran her thumb across the first line. The class was meeting in the gym on Saturday. Forty years, and nobody had thought to ask whether she still remembered the cell for the letter C. She did. She had never once forgotten a thing she had pressed into paper herself.
She took his hand and laid two of his fingers on the page, guiding them until he felt the ridges shift into a word. "Come," he said slowly, and looked up at her with the expression of someone who had been handed a key. She took the stylus back and pressed a reply onto a scrap of card in neat, deliberate rows, then slid it across to him. "Your turn," she said. "Now write me something I can't read with my eyes."
