The dog came aboard at Hull with the coal, a grey lurcher with one ear that won't stand up, and the mate swears he belongs to nobody. I didn't argue. Nobody on this tub belongs to anybody much. He sleeps across the threshold of the galley where the heat comes out of the range, and every morning I find his prints in the flour I've dusted over the board for the bread.

Last Tuesday there were two sets, one above the other and pressed so neat I thought at first someone had stamped them with a tin lid. Each pad came out heart-shaped, the way his always do, with a little clean patch where the flour didn't take. Then I saw the trail ran to the door, stopped, and came back again. He had stood in the doorway a long while, as if deciding something.

I think I know what he was deciding. The Captain has been talking about putting in at Rotterdam and selling off the spare stores, and the dog has been watching the gangway like a man watching the last train out.

I have not swept the flour. I have made the bread around them, careful as a tailor, and the loaf came out with two small hearts pressed into the crust. Bring your boots when you come down to Hull. I'll leave the back door open for you both.
