Small enso circle on a wrist

Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single black open circle sits on the inner wrist, with a thicker start on the left that tapers as the line curves round to the right. The linework is solid and smooth with a slightly textured, brushed edge, and the ink is dark grey-black with no colour. The background is out of focus, showing a pink object and window light, while the wrist and tattoo stay sharp in the lower half of the frame.

Dear Marit,

The brush is wrapped in oilcloth on the shelf above the stove, where you left it, and I have not touched it since the boat went out on Tuesday. Mr Halvorsen says the ink has gone thick in the cold, so I stood the bottle in a saucer of warm water the way you showed me. Don't scold me. I know you would have done it properly.

Here is what I still can't get right. You told me the circle has to be drawn in one breath, that the start should be heavy with ink because that is where the hand commits, and that the line should thin as it runs out so the gap at the end is honest. I tried it forty times on the back of the tide tables. Every one closed up or wobbled. On the forty-first the ink ran dry halfway round, and I laughed out loud on my own in the kitchen like a fool.

The one I kept is pinned by the door. The gap faces the window, where the light comes in off the sound. I think that was the point you were making all along, that you don't close it. You leave the door open for whatever might come back across the water.

Come home when the crossing's calm. Bring the good ink.

Love, Ingrid
