Please go around calf tattoo
Lettering · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A calf seen from behind, with a design of a black arrow curving left beside a black sign-like shape, and the red capitals PLEASE GO AROUND stacked below. The lettering is bold and flat with solid fills and clean edges, and the skin tone is even. The purple diamond-plate background and pink running shoes fill the rest of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The brush is still wet when Mr Pargeter from the council rings the bell at the back of the shop, so you wipe your hands on the rag and tell him the arrow will be dry by dinner. He doesn't want the arrow. He wants the words, the red ones, stacked under the black sign so that the lorries coming down Mill Lane from the quarry will stop before they reach the ford.

You've painted forty of these since spring. Nobody reads a sign that's too clever, your father used to say, so you keep the letters fat and plain, the way the chapel notices are. The arrow curves left like a man pointing at his own elbow. Pargeter stands in the road in his good coat and squints at it for a long time, and then he says the ford has been under for three weeks, and the fool in the baker's van keeps trying it anyway.
On the third morning the van comes round the bend regardless, its driver leaning out to read the thing you have made. He reverses, grumbling, and takes the long way past the mill. You watch from the step with the tin of red in your hand, and when he waves, you raise your brush the way a painter does when a job has gone right.
