Steampunk woman with cane on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A full-colour illustrated figure of a steampunk woman in a top hat with goggles, a corseted outfit, lace-trimmed skirt and boots, holding a brass cane, with a dark cape flaring behind her. The linework is clean and outlined, with soft shading in browns, tans and muted greys. The tattoo sits on the thigh of a leg shown against a plain light background, with a cream heeled shoe in the lower corner.

You are three days out from Liverpool on the airship Halcyon Rook when the pressure gauges begin to sing. Mr Obadiah Pryce has already gone below with his ledger, insisting the drop in hull pressure is nothing more than a sulking valve, but you have crossed enough oceans to know a lie when it hums. You tap the brass cane against the rail, twice, the signal the stokers taught you, and wait for an answer from the engine room.

It comes back wrong. Three taps. Someone has tampered with the ballast chains, and the only person aboard with a key to the forward locker is the man who sold you this passage for the price of a dead woman's pearls. Your cape snaps behind you in the wind off the cloud bank, dark as wet cedar, and you tuck the copper-rimmed lenses down over your eyes and climb the ladder to the gasbag catwalk, your lace hem catching on rivets at every rung.
Halfway up, the ship lurches and the catwalk drops away beneath your boots. You hang by one hand from a guy wire, the cane clamped in the other, and understand that the hunt is not for the saboteur but for you. Below, the Atlantic is a grey plate with a single white wake drawn across it, like a line someone began and forgot to finish.
You haul yourself up, cut the false chain with the cane's hidden blade, and watch the airship rise. By dawn the Rook will be over the coast of Newfoundland, and by noon Mr Pryce will be explaining to the constables why his ledger is one woman short. You straighten your hat and speak down the tube: 'Gentlemen, we are now a little lighter, and I believe that is what we came for.'
