Sloth face and quote on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A smiling sloth face sits at the centre of the design, with the words LIVE SLOW arched above it and DIE WHENEVER beneath it. The sloth is drawn with fine, stippled linework and soft shading in brown-black ink, and the lettering uses a thin, simple sans-serif. The tattoo is photographed on the inner forearm close to the wrist against a plain white background, with a hand visible below.

Dear Nell,

We are nine days out from Santos and the crew has finally stopped asking me why the cargo hold smells of leaves. The stowaway is a three-toed sloth called Mr Pim, who came aboard in a coconut crate on the quay at Belém and has not, to my knowledge, moved faster than the tide since. The cook feeds him lettuce from a bucket hung on a rope. The bosun tried to shift him off the rail on the second day and got a look of such mild contempt that he went below and sulked for an hour.
Captain Ashdown has no patience for anything that takes longer than a bell. Yesterday a squall came up off the Cape Verde islands faster than anyone expected, and the mate was bellowing for the topsails to come in at once, men scrambling along the yards like frightened monkeys. Pim was on the rail beside me. He did not hurry. He hooked his claws into the rope, turned his face to the wind and let it go past him, the way you'd let a bad dream go past. I swear he was smiling. Then the rain came sideways, the watch sorted itself out, and nobody lost a finger.
Afterwards the captain stood over the crate with his hat in his hands and said nothing for a long time. Then he asked the cook for an extra cabbage.
We dock at Liverpool on the twelfth, if the wind holds, which it won't, because nothing about this voyage has been in a hurry. I'll bring Pim home to you if Mother lets me. Tell her he eats less than the parrot.
Your loving brother, Tom
