Please Go Around arrows on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two black arrows sit above red capital letters that read PLEASE GO AROUND, placed on the back of a lower leg. The arrows are solid black with a textured fill, and the lettering is a bold red sans serif with crisp edges. The leg is photographed from behind against a purple diamond plate background, with pink and grey running shoes at the bottom of the frame.

The sign had been propped against the gate of Hollin's Orchard since Tuesday, held in place with two bricks and a length of baler twine, and by Thursday the whole lane had an opinion about it. Ruth Amory had painted it herself in her kitchen, using a stencil she'd cut from an old cereal box and a tin of red gloss left over from the chapel railings. The council's yellow boards had blown into the hedge in the first gale of August, and she was not going to wait for a man with a van to decide what counted as urgent.

The trouble was a wasp nest the size of a rugby ball, hung in the low fork of the oldest Bramley, right above the footpath. Half the village had walked under it for forty years without a scratch, but Gordon Fenn had come off his bicycle swatting, and that was the end of the discussion. Walkers read the sign, frowned at the arrows, and went round by the stile, muttering that it wasn't a proper warning if it was so polite. One small boy asked why it said please. Ruth told him the wasps had never learned to read, so the sign had to do all the asking.
By the last week of the month the windfalls lay thick under the trees, sweet and brown, and the wasps were drunk on them and too slow to bother anyone. Ruth walked the path every evening with a torch, checking the twine. On the Friday she found a child's trainer lodged in the gap under the gate, pink and muddy, and she left it there on the bottom bar where the owner would see it. Then she tightened the knot, stepped back, and let the arrows keep pointing the long way round, past the wall, to the trees that still had something worth picking.
