Pocket watch, feather and rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm sleeve centres on an ornate pocket watch with Roman numerals and engraved scrollwork, with a large feather rising beside it. A grey rose and a key sit lower on the arm, with soft smoke-like swirls linking the elements. The shading is smooth and detailed with strong contrast, and the image is a close, angled view of the arm against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The watchmaker's widow kept the clock on Corn Street running for forty years, and when she died the council sent a man up a ladder to wind it. He was called Tobias Reed and had never wound anything older than his own boots. The lamps were lit by the time he reached the face, and smoke from the bakery chimneys drifted across the glass like breath on a cold window.

Inside the case he found a small brass key tied to a ribbon, and a grey rose pressed flat between the pages of a ledger. The ledger listed every hour she had ever wound, in neat columns, and beside each one a feather marked the place. Goose quill at the start, then gull, then a pale grey pigeon feather near the end. He read until the bells of St Brannoc's struck eleven, which was the wrong hour, because the clock had stopped at a quarter past nine.

Tobias understood then what she had been doing. Each night she had wound the watch for someone who had walked out of the city and never come back, and she had asked the clock to keep their time instead of her own. He turned the key until it caught. The hands moved one notch, then another, and down by the canal a window opened and a woman began to sing.

He climbed down before the song ended. In the morning the rose on the ledger had softened, its petals grey as ash, and the council paid him for a day's work he had not quite finished. Tobias wore the key on his own ribbon after that. He never told anyone how many hours he owed, nor who was still waiting by the water for the next one to chime.
