Pocket watch with gears on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with a Roman numeral dial sits within a ring of gears, with a large Roman numeral XII below and a numeral at the edge of the frame. The watch case and cogs are rendered with smooth shading, highlights and cast shadows. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the forearm, with the watch centred and the numerals framing it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost has got into the gate hinges again, and you are late with the feed because the kitchen clock says ten to six while the yard clearly says otherwise. Your grandfather's pocket watch hangs from its nail by the back door, where he left it the morning he went into hospital in Carlisle. You lift it down. The case is cold as a step stone, and when you open it the gears have stiffened in the night air, the minute hand creeping forward as if it wants to be early for something.

You tilt it toward the window and look closely at the dial. The Roman numerals have worn soft at their edges, but the XII still stands sharp at the bottom, like a fence post that has never once leaned. He used to say the trick was to trust the wheels rather than the sky. So you wind the crown slowly, counting turns the way he taught you, and stop a hair before the spring can object. The second hand shivers, catches, and begins to sweep.

Outside, the cattle are shifting and lowing in the byre, impatient with you. You slide the watch into your coat pocket, where its weight settles against your ribs, and you haul the fork through the silage until your breath comes in white clouds. The sky over the top field has gone the colour of pewter. By the time you reach the troughs the watch reads exactly right, and you feel a stupid little flicker of satisfaction, as though he might somehow have seen it.

Back in the kitchen you hang it on the nail again. It ticks against the wall in the dark, true to the minute, and the house sounds for the first time in weeks as though someone is keeping it.
