Poke Ball heart on the lower torso
Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo is a small heart shaped like a Poke Ball, with a red upper half, a black horizontal band, a central button and a white lower half. The shapes are cleanly outlined and shaded with smooth highlights that give the red sections a rounded, glossy look. The design sits centrally on the lower torso above dark jeans, with a patterned black and white top and a bag strap visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Imogen,

The crate from the drowned district of the Severn arrived on this morning's barge. The salvager swore he had not opened it, though the straps were already cut and the oilcloth inside had gone the colour of stewed tea. Wrapped in it was the thing you asked me to look out for: a small sphere, white on the lower half and red on the upper, with a black band across its middle like a belt and a grey button at its centre. Someone had pressed that button once. The enamel still held a faint warmth, and the barge crew could not say what it was for.
I carried it to the cold room at the back of the archive, where the lamps only burn when the wind is kind, and I sat with it for the best part of an hour. Turning it under the lamp, I noticed the sphere was not round at all. Its lower curve tipped into a point, and its upper lobes swelled as though two halves had been pinched together by a careful thumb. It was a heart, shaped by someone who had been hiding a heart inside a device for catching small, bright things.
I tried the button. The band clicked, the two halves parted along a seam I had taken for a crack, and inside lay a folded paper no bigger than a fingernail. On it, in pencil, a list of names and a single line: keep the ones who come back to you.
I am sending it south on the next boat, sealed in its oilcloth. Read the names before you decide whether the archive keeps it or the sea does.
Yours in the grey weather, Marta
