At ten to four the ward goes quiet in the way you have learned to trust, and that is when the bird finds you. It is a swift or a swallow, you cannot tell in the dim light, and it has been striking the high window of Bay Four since midnight with a sound like someone tapping a coin on glass. Sister Ffion Pryce wants it out before the morning round. She says it will foul the floor. You say nothing, because you have already decided.

You take the fire door at the end of the corridor, the one that sticks, and prop it open with a folded sheet from the linen trolley. Then you stand on the bottom step of the stairwell with your torch in your teeth and wait. Outside, the car park lamps make the wet tarmac look like hammered tin. The bird doesn't come. You count to two hundred, then to two hundred again, and you start to think you have been foolish, a porter with a torch and a sheet, waiting on a creature with more sense than you.

Then it comes, low and fast, straight through the gap between the door and the frame, its wings folding at the last second like a dropped letter. It circles the stairwell once, twice, and lands on the rail above your head. For a moment you think it will stay. Instead it looks down at you with one black eye and goes out into the dark over the bins.

Back on the ward Sister asks if it has gone, and you tell her yes. At handover you write in the night log: Bay Four window clear, 04:12. Under it, out of habit, you draw a small heart, and then, because it looks wrong without company, you draw a bird sitting in its upper curve.
