Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a police box outline in white on black, with the lines of a quote written across it in flowing script. The quote reads We're all stories in the end, Just make it a good one, with looping flourishes at the start and end of the lettering. The linework is solid white with a distressed, speckled texture, and there is no shading or colour.

The box first showed up at the bend past the salt flats, a white outline standing on nothing but grit, with a stepped roof and a chimney that didn't belong to any house. I was towing a Corolla with a seized radiator and I drove straight past it, because a sensible man doesn't stop for a box in the desert.

The second time, a month later, the door was ajar and the air inside smelled of hot dust and oranges. A woman in a grey coat sat at a fold-out table, reading aloud from a notebook to nobody. She looked up and said the road ends for everyone, and asked whether I'd like a better ending for mine. I told her I had a tow to finish. She said everybody says that, and then she pushed a stub of pencil across the table.

I wrote on the back of a fuel receipt, because that was what was in my pocket: the tow got to Barstow, the mechanic found a new thermostat, and the radiator held all the way to the coast. When I looked up the woman had gone, and the box was just a line of white on black, the sort of shape you see when the sun's been in your eyes too long. I folded the receipt into the sun visor.

I drive that road every Tuesday now, slowing at the bend to see if the outline is still there. Some weeks it is. Mostly I just read the receipt at the lights in town, and I think about how much of a life is only the middle, and how little of it I'd bothered to write down.
