Script lettering reading The struggle is part of the story

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the phrase The struggle is part of the story written in flowing black handwritten script across three lines on a pale cream background. The strokes are even and monoline, with looped capitals and connected letters that give a hand-drawn feel. The composition is centred with generous empty space around the text, and there is no body part, shading or colour beyond the black ink.

Dear Tomas, the ferry from Vellisar was cancelled again, so I am writing this on the back of a customs form at the harbour inn, where the landlady has given me a lamp and a pot of ink that smells of walnuts. You will laugh at me for complaining. Three nights ago the mule went lame on the salt road and I walked the last nine miles with a boot full of blood and a tin of your mother's plums rattling in my pack. I have decided it is funny now, which is more than I could manage at the time.

The clerk at the quay asked why I looked so pleased with myself, and I told him I had a letter to finish. He said nobody writes letters any more, only lists. I told him that was exactly why I was still writing them. He stamped my papers with a face like a closed door, but as he handed them back he said, quite unprompted, that the crossing was always rough in the month of the long rains and that people who made it through were the ones worth knowing. I did not know whether he meant it kindly.

So here is my conclusion, and you may frame it if you like. Every hard mile I have walked this year has ended up in a story I wanted to tell you. The bad road, the drowned sheep, the innkeeper's cruel dog. None of it was wasted. I am beginning to think the difficulty is simply the part where the pages get interesting. Write back to the Lantern Street address, and tell me whether the lighthouse has finally been painted.

Yours in ink and salt, Ilse
