Script lettering: The Struggle is part of the Story
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A flowing black script reads The Struggle is part of the Story across three lines on a cream background with soft darker vignetting. The letterforms have varied stroke weights, with looped ascenders and tails that link the words. The composition is centred with even spacing, and the lettering fills most of the frame.

You'll remember the pear tree by the shed. Dad planted it the spring you were born and it sulked for eleven years, all leaf and no fruit. Mr Okafor from the allotments kept telling him to cut it back hard, and Dad wouldn't, and the two of them argued over the fence every March as if it were a matter for the council. Last week I went out with the secateurs anyway, because the wood had gone soft at the join, and found a cluster of small hard pears hiding under the top branch like they'd been waiting for someone to stop fussing.
I've pinned a card to the potting shed door with the words Dad painted on the cracked slate by the gate, the bit about the struggle being part of the story. He always meant it as a joke about the couch grass. I don't think it's a joke now. I think it's just the part of the garden you can't dig out, so you learn to grow round it.
Come at the weekend and we'll pick them together. Bring the good ladder, the one with both feet still on it, and don't let Tom talk you into the ropey one.
