The prior wanted the book closed properly. "A full stop," he said, tapping the parchment with a thick finger. "Dead men's accounts end where they end." Hugh nodded and carried the volume back to his carrel, where the candle guttered in the draught from the cloister door.

He sat with it through Compline. Then he dipped his pen, wrote the words the abbot had meant to write, and above the place where a full stop belonged he set a small round dot, and below it a curved tail that dropped like a bead of wax. It was not a mark he had seen in any exemplar. He had invented it that night, and he knew the prior would scowl.

In the morning the prior came with his hand out for the book. Hugh gave it to him open at the page. The prior read it twice, lips moving, and said nothing for so long that the bell for Prime rang over his silence. Then he closed the book gently, the way one closes a door on someone sleeping, and handed it back. "Leave it," he said. "Let the reader wait."
