Ilse was kneeling on the floor with a wide board across her knees. She had been cutting the same curl for three days, a spiral that began fat at the root and tightened toward a point like a held breath. "It has to turn back on itself," she said without looking up. "Otherwise it's only a wave, and waves go home."

I thought of the stream below the village, how it folded over the stones and came round again at the same bend every spring. I told her so. She laughed, a short, unimpressed sound, and handed me the gouge. "Then cut it the way the water would, and stop when it wants to stop."

Ilse was never wrong about wood. By dusk the spiral sat inside its border of fine hatching, grey-blue where the chalk had settled into the grain, and the village children crowded in one by one to touch the new thing. Mereth ran her thumb along the curl and said nothing, which from her was praise. Ilse took the sack of chalk home with her, and I kept the gouge.
