The carrier came up the lane this morning with the last of the wool and asked whether I was still taking the Tuesday coach to Thornwick. I said I was. I did not tell him that the tin of blackberry jam you left on my step is still unopened on the dresser, because I cannot bring myself to eat the thing you made while pretending it was no trouble at all.

You will find this under the root where you keep your spare boots, which is where you will look first. I know you will not read it straight away. You will walk out to the far field and sit on the stile and stare at the sycamore, the way you always do when something has gone wrong and you would rather not say so.

If the road takes me past the mill and I do not come back by the spring, do not go looking. Mind the hives. Feed the hens dry bran on Thursdays, not the wet mash, or they stop laying. And when the wind blows the first brown leaves across the lane, let one of them settle on your hat. Think of me, if you like, but then tell it to be on its way, because it has never once waited for anybody.
