Sitting dog with heart balloons on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A small outline of a seated dog with a red collar looks up at two heart-shaped balloons drawn in red and black. The linework is thin and continuous, with no shading, and the drawing sits against a plain skin tone on a dark background. The composition is simple, with the dog in the lower part of the frame and the balloon strings rising to the upper right.

The Lark had been moored below Hythe Lock since Tuesday, and Ada still hadn't found the nerve to tell the dog he was too old for the gangplank. Tobias sat on the cabin roof with his back to the wind, the way he always did when the boat was still, as if the canal might move without him and he meant to be ready for it.

The fair came to the water meadow on Saturday with its generator humming and its stalls strung with bunting. Ada bought two heart-shaped balloons from a man with a cigarette behind one ear, paying with coins she'd counted twice, and tied their strings to the brass rail by the chimney. One was red and glossy. The other was clear as a window, with only its outline printed in black, so you saw the sky through it. Tobias watched them tug at the rail all evening and didn't once bark.

In the night the wind came up off the fields and she woke to the sound of rubber knocking against the roof. The red one had come loose. She got out in her socks and found it already over the poplars, climbing, while the clear one still strained at its knot. She didn't chase it. When she looked down, Tobias was standing at the stern with his nose lifted, and he stayed like that until the red heart was only a rumour against the stars.

In the morning the balloon was caught in the alder beside the lock gate, turning slowly in the first light. Tobias had already gone down the towpath to sit beneath it, collar tag catching the sun, patient as a stone. Ada brought his lead and her tea, and for once she didn't say anything about the gangplank.
