Three rabbits on a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
Three cartoon rabbits sit side by side across the skin of a foot, one facing left, one upright and facing forward, and one facing right. The outer linework is dark and the bodies are filled with soft grey and tan shading that gives a gentle, painterly finish. The rabbits are set on a plain, light skin background, with a dark textured surface visible at the top of the frame.

The three rabbits had been waiting by the back step since before the kettle boiled, and Mrs Pennock was not pleased about it. Dora had found them in the hedge after the frost, one grey, one the colour of marmalade, one grey again with a torn ear, and had brought them indoors in her cardigan without asking anybody. Now they sat in a row on the lino like a jury, not one of them willing to face the cooker.

"They eat cabbage," Mrs Pennock said. "I do not have cabbage. I have a sponge that is going stale."
Dora knelt and offered the crust of her toast. The marmalade one stood up on its hind legs, considered it, and turned its back. The grey one on the left hopped sideways to the mat and sat down with a heavy, put-upon air. The one with the torn ear simply leaned against Dora's knee and closed its eyes, as if the matter had been settled some time ago and everyone else was just slow.
By teatime the sponge was gone, a jar of Mrs Pennock's blackcurrant jam had been licked from a saucer, and the three of them had taken possession of the armchair by the window. Dora had written a note to the milkman about them and then torn it up, because it was obvious nobody was going to be claiming them now.
In the morning the marmalade rabbit was gone from the armchair, and the back door stood open an inch to the frost. Mrs Pennock found it sitting on the step with its face to the sun, two paws raised as though it had been waiting for her to notice. She made a face, fetched the cabbage from the bottom of the fridge, and left the door open all the same.
