Fine line vine tattoo across a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A slim black vine with small pointed leaves climbs from the ankle across the top of the foot and extends towards the little toes. The linework is thin and even, with the leaves drawn as simple outlines and filled shapes. The ink is black on pale skin, and the plain dark surface behind the foot keeps the design clearly visible.

The bindweed came up through the cracks in the dodgem track the week the fair pitched at Harrowby, and by the time the lorries were loaded it had found the ticket hut and wound three times round its hinge. Nobody had planted it. You pulled at it with your thumbs and it snapped back, thin as cotton, leaves no bigger than a fingernail, so you left it be and told Mr Pryce it was the damp.

The fair moved on through the wet spring, from Market Deeping to a sugar-beet field outside Spalding, and every morning the vine had gone further. It ran along the generator cable, up the handrail of the waltzer, and across the step of your caravan where the paint had blistered. Pryce said it was a sign and then said it was a nuisance. Mrs Okonedo, who sold toffee apples from the van with the blue awning, said it was only trying to reach the sea.

You began cutting it back on Thursdays with the kitchen scissors, but the clippings rooted in the jam jars on your sill, and by the time you reached Boston there were eleven small plants and nowhere to put them. So on the last night at the showground you carried the jars out to the verge and tipped them into the ditch, where the grass was long and nobody would ask what you were doing.

In the morning the fair was gone and the ditch ran green to the water. One shoot had already crossed the gravel towards the lane, its leaves turned to the sun, reaching for the next town as though somebody had told it the route.
