Popsicle tattoos on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A hand holds a pink ice lolly aloft against a plain white wall. Four small popsicle designs in blue, pink, red and multicoloured tones sit along the inner forearm, drawn with simple flat outlines and solid fills. The white background and soft lighting keep the focus on the arm and the bright colours.

The freezer hatch on Brackle Pier had been sulking since Tuesday, and by Thursday the whole front of the kiosk was sweating like a cold bottle. Mr Okonedo from the chip shop leaned on my counter and asked if I had anything frozen that wasn't peas. I told him the lollies at the back were still hard enough to knock on, if he didn't mind a faint taste of the peas.

At ten to five a boy called Teddy came along the boards with a crumpled receipt and a biro. He wanted to trade. He had drawn four ice lollies on the back: one blue with a lean to it, one pink like a tongue, one rocket-red with white stripes, and one the colours of a spilt paint pot with dots running down it. He offered to sweep the sand off my step for the lot. I said the freezer might not survive the bargain, and he said then we'd better hurry.

We sold the pink one first, though I'd sworn I wouldn't. Then the freezer gave a shudder, coughed and started humming again, and I found the four colours Teddy had drawn exactly where I'd put them years ago, lined up by their sticks in the bottom drawer like a fleet waiting on the weather.

I gave him the blue one, the one with the lean, and he ate it sitting on the rail with the sea going green beneath his heels. He never once asked whether it was a fair deal.
