Three digital watches stacked on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three digital wristwatch designs are stacked along the inner wrist, one white-grey, one green and one coral, each with a thin dark outline and a simple display panel. The linework is fine and even, with flat, soft colour fills rather than shading. The wrist is shown in close crop against a red and white striped fabric on a plain light background.

You open the lost property cupboard at Harrowgate Junction at ten to six, when the first commuters are still scraping frost off their windscreens in the car park. The shelves hold umbrellas, a single child's welly, and a violin case nobody has claimed since March. Watches always end up in the biscuit tin, because people never ask for them back. Three digital ones sit on top of it, strapped together to a card that reads FOUND PLATFORM 4, 14:20, in Mr Pell's looping capitals.

The white one still shows 14:20. The green one reads 03:17. The coral one blinks 00:00 and has done so since the night the signal box flooded. Pell used to say a watch left on a platform keeps the time of the last train it saw. You never believed him, but you have stopped setting them right. Instead you set each one to the minute your shift ends, when the final service has gone and the station smells of diesel and cold tea.
Tonight the coral one stops blinking. It settles on 06:02, the departure time of the Leeds train that was cancelled in the winter of the floods. Through the window the platform lamps flicker on one after another, the way they did before the contractors replaced the wiring. The tannoy clicks. A man's voice announces a train approaching platform two, though the departures board is blank and the rails below are bare.
You pick up the green watch and press its button, and its little digits roll over to 06:02 as if they have been waiting. Somewhere along the line a door sighs open. You set the three watches back on the card, face up, the way Pell left them, and you wait for the footsteps.
