Colin Mabbott had rehearsed his answer in the car park of the Crown Hotel, but when Sandra Lowe from Year Nine leaned across the buffet and asked what he did now, the words came out in the wrong order. "Assistant Regional Manager," he said, and then, because the silence wanted filling, "of a paper merchant's in Stockport. Regional. Assistant."

Sandra's husband, who had once sold him a bicycle, asked whether that meant he had a regional manager of his own. Colin said he did, a woman called Hollis who kept her stapler in a locked drawer and had once rung him at home to ask whether he had locked it. He described the quarterly sales figures with the reverence other men reserved for football scores, and found that the whole table had gone quiet to listen.

Across the room, Mr Ashworth, their old chemistry teacher, was wearing the same tie he had worn in 1994. He came over, shook Colin's hand, and said he had always known Colin would end up running something. "Running it into the ground, more likely," Colin said, and laughed louder than he meant to.

On the drive home he pulled into the layby by the reservoir and sat with the engine off, turning over the visitor badge he had forgotten to take off. Assistant Regional Manager, it said, in capitals that had already started to curl at the corners. He folded it into the glovebox beside the spare bulbs and drove home the long way, past the school, where the lights were still on in the staffroom window.
