Traditional style tattoo on an upper arm showing a woman in dark judicial robes and glasses, framed by green laurels and a red banner reading SUPREME.

Robed portrait with laurels on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A bold portrait of a woman with dark hair, round glasses and a white jabot collar, wearing a black robe, is set above a banner reading SUPREME. Green laurel leaves curve around the figure and banner. Black outlines, flat fills and a limited palette of red, green, cream and skin tones give it a classic traditional look, shown on the outer upper arm.

The jabot took Ada three nights. It was starched cotton, pleated by hand, and Maud Tennant would accept nothing that looked like a bib. "A bib is for lobsters," she said, standing on the stool in Ada's back room with her arms out like a heron. Outside, the regatta pennants snapped on the harbour wall, and the wind had been rattling the shop windows since Tuesday.

The robe was black wool off a bolt from a funeral outfitter in Penzance, which Maud said was the only honest thing in the county. Ada cut it on the big table, chalk lines over old newspaper, while the kettle went cold twice. She sewed by lamplight until the hem and the collar agreed with each other, and somewhere past midnight she stopped minding the ache in her shoulders.

On the last morning the committee came up the stairs with a painted board from the sign-writer on Quay Street. Laurel leaves curled around the edge, green and fresh as cut limes, and across the bottom in red capitals was the word SUPREME. Maud read it twice, then looked at Ada over the top of her spectacles.

"Too much," she said, and then, after a long moment, "Leave it up." She buttoned the robe to the throat, squared her shoulders and went down to the water to hand out the medals. Ada stayed at the window with pins still in her mouth, watching the small red flags go up one by one.
