Cartoon character with banners on thigh

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A bold cartoon character wearing round glasses and holding a sugar skull sits at the centre of the design, framed by two teal banners with the words Sympathy for the Unusual. Thick black outlines define the shapes, with flat areas of pink, teal, cream and orange, and small pink and teal accents surround the figure. The design fills the thigh from top to bottom, with the banners wrapping around the figure.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The committee wanted the marrow gone by Friday. Mrs Pargeter had already paced out its plot with a tape measure borrowed from the council, and she stood at the gate holding her clipboard like a summons. I pushed my round glasses up my nose and told her the marrow had broken no rules except growing in the shape of a cello, which is more than the Pargeters' gnomes could say.

Plot fourteen had always been the odd one. Walter grew only blue potatoes and talked to them. Ruth kept a heron in her shed that she insisted was a retired solicitor. The goldfinches had nested in my cold frame three springs running, and I had never once moved their eggs. Nobody on the site liked everyone else, but we had all agreed, long before the committee existed, to leave each other's strangeness alone.

The rule book said so, and I had brought it. It was damp and smelled of the potting shed, and on its last page someone had written in green paint: sympathy for the unusual, the rest is weeds. Mrs Pargeter read it twice. Then she read it a third time, slower, and I watched her mouth work around the word sympathy as though it were a boiled sweet she had found in her coat pocket.

The vote was four to two. I had brought a sugar skull to the meeting in case the vote went badly, and I gave it to her as she left. She ate the forehead first, then the cheekbones, and by the time she reached the gate the goldfinches had settled on the marrow's neck, and she was smiling in spite of herself.
